30. Caetano Veloso – London, London (1969)

Caetano Veloso is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and activist, still recording and performing today. He was one of the main forces behind the Tropicália movement in the 1960s, which combined Brazilian bossa nova with African rhythms and American rock ‘n’ roll, and then paired this music with a radical leftist political agenda. Cool stuff.

Because of their politics and their influence, both Veloso and Gilberto Gil were arrested in 1969  by the Brazilian Military Dictatorship and sent off into exile. They ended up in London, where Veloso wrote this strange and lovely little song.

As so often happens, it’s a weird youtube video… but interesting viewing all the same. And it’s probably a truer song about walking the streets of London than the tripe we get from Ralph McTell.
